FILM SOUNDTRACK
Look at the soundtrack sheet for the film. There is a wide range of artists including Anglo-Saxon, Afro-American, soloists and groups. The music was a mixture of rock'roll, pop, ballads and protest songs. How is the choice of music reflective of the ideas and feelings of the American people at the time (represented by Forrest and his adventures). Refer to specific titles and what you think they are suggesting. Even if you do not know the song you should be able to decipher some meaning from its title.

  1. The sound track from Forrest Gump have many songs that suggests feelings and ideas of the American people at the time.

A song is The Rooftop Singers walk right in, this songs title Walk Right In suggests that you can walk right in whatever you would like to do. This song also relates to Forrest Gump because he walks right into life and walks right into everything for example when he starts playing football

  2. I'm guessing "all along the watch tower" (originally bob dylan) by jimi hendrix, well from its lyrics "there must be some kind of way out of here, said the joker to the thief, this must be an illusion, i can't get no relief" that for the Vietnam soldiers, the war was like an inescapable realm, their voices were metaphorically stolen from that of the older generation who had forced them to war since they were conscripted, that there was no escape from this strange country that was Vietnam- that there was not time to relax or ask for help but fight no matter what circumstances. I like this song; Bob Dylan's blowing in the wind reflects Jenny's life as nomadic? just guessing.

  3. Also the song by Bob Dylan Blowing in the wind is i think a song about Jennys whole life as it goes from good to bad, to seeing Forrest to not seeing him, It reflects Jennys whole life.

  4. Some all time classics in this movie, including:

'For What Its Worth' by Buffalo Springfield - In this song it starts "There’s something happening here..." and this is played when the presidents are being assassinated, and when Forrest reports the strange lights from the building across the street.

‘Fortunate Son’ by Creedence Clearwater Revival – Is played when Vietnam is introduced, and the helicopters are flying overhead. This helps to set the scene and mood.

‘San Francisco’ by Scott McKenzie – This is played when showing what Jenny had been through, and when she was offered to go to San Francisco with the hippie movement.

‘Sweet Home Alabama’ by Lynyrd Skynyrd, ‘It Keeps You Running’ by the Doobie Brothers, and ‘On the road again” by Willie nelson – are all played when Forrest goes on his run around America.

    Great hits!

  5. 'Fortunate Son' by Creedence Clearwater Revival was about President Nixon's son-in-law (the son of the former president Eisenhower) who was exempt from Vietnam duty because he was the son of a President - the fortunate son

  9. The lyrics found within the famous songs used were found to describe or assist in explaining the scene occuring.

It is a good technique that gives the movie that little extra uniqueness, it is quite like when Forrest says a phrase or sentence which is reiterated by the dialogue of the movie itself

  14. The songs through out the movie reflect the historical events that are occuring and the response and the affects that it is having on america. The sound track for forrest gump has a wide range of diefferent songs because of the diverse setions through the movie.

The song “Fortunate Son” by Creedence clearwater revival is playing when they first arrive at vietnam, this music was playing the represent the emotions that the people in vietnam were feeling. At this time they were having a Bbq and listening to music. This happy moment at which they were not yet fighting was a happy time and was portrayed by the happy up beat son.

The title of the song “fortunate son” suggests that he was fortunate to be at war figghting for his country, and this moment is seen as a happy time because at this time there is no fighting but there is a party going on and every one is meeting new people and being seen as fortunate.

  15. Fortunate son- Creedence Clearwater Revival
The song which I would like to focus on is Fortunate Son by Creedence Clear Water revival. This reflects the society of the 1950-70s. This song (mentioned above) helps to break the scence up and portrays to us the Veitnam war. This one song helps to illustate that particular scence (when their in Veitnam) and reflects the tradgety of the war

As we can see the songs all throughout the movie intend to portary to the audience a message. Other songs include:
    Disc One
1."Hound Dog" performed by Elvis Presley – 2:16
2."Rebel Rouser" performed by Duane Eddy – 2:21
3."(I Don't Know Why) But I Do" performed by Clarence Frogman Henry – 2:18
4."Walk Right In" performed by The Rooftop Singers – 2:33
5."Land of 1000 Dances" performed by Wilson Pickett – 2:25
6."Blowin' in the Wind" performed by Joan Baez – 2:36
7."Fortunate Son" performed by Creedence Clearwater Revival – 2:18
8."I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" performed by The Four Tops – 2:43
    9."Respect" performed by Aretha Franklin – 2:27
    10."Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" performed by Bob Dylan – 4:35
    11."Sloop John B" performed by Beach Boys – 2:56
12."California Dreamin'" performed by The Mamas & the Papas – 2:39
13."For What It's Worth" performed by Buffalo Springfield – 2:38
14."What the World Needs Now Is Love" performed by Jackie DeShannon – 3:13
15."Break On Through (To the Other Side)" performed by The Doors – 2:27
    16."Mrs. Robinson" performed by Simon & Garfunkel – 3:51

All these song reflect a particular mood within the film. These songs are shown during times of hardship, wrong doing and horrific experiences. This helps to create a suspensful atmoshphere wihin the viewing experience.

  16. I believe the soundtrack lifted the mood of each scene in which the song was played. The music was used both as a timeline AND a means of representing the atmosphere of the movie.

The music was also used very subtly to coincide with the movie. The Fortunate Son – CCR is a great example of how music reflects the storyline.

Well done to the music producers.
